Fostering Information
Fostering is a life-saving activity people can do to help homeless animals. Animals are fostered for a wide variety of reasons. Some are being treated for a medical condition such as upper-respiratory disease or heartworm treatments. Others need a little socializing to make the animal less shy or fearful. Sometimes there are mothers with young puppies or kittens who wouldn’t thrive in a shelter environment -this is also a great way for children to learn about “the miracle of birth” without letting your own animal have puppies or kittens! Some shelters just need to open up cage space because there are too many animals. Animals are sent to foster homes to get them out of the shelter environment, which is noisy and stressful. Some rescue groups without a shelter use foster homes until permanent homes are found, and you may foster an animal for 3-6 months. Animal shelters, on the other hand, tend to use foster homes for shorter periods of time and utilize their foster homes more for recuperation or space issues. There are many, many organizations that utilize foster homes. I’ve found this to be a great way for families to volunteer together. Animal welfare organizations are always looking for new foster homes because they frequently lose foster homes due to the foster family falling in love and adopting the animal they were fostering!
Here is a list of animal welfare organizations in my area that are always looking for foster homes:
South Suburban Humane Society (my shelter!) – Chicago Heights, IL
Humane Society of the Calumet Area - Munster, IN The Anti-Cruelty Society - Chicago, IL PAWS Chicago - Chicago, IL The Independent Cat Society - Westville, IN Humane Society of Northwest Indiana - Gary, IN Pet Adoption League (PALS) - Frankfort, IL Treasured Friends Rescue- Highland, IN Child and Pet Relief Fund – Lowell, IN
